Từ nhiều thập kỷ qua, vai trò của các nhân viên y tế thôn bản (YTTB) là rất quan trọng trong việc đóng góp vai trò của mình trong xây dựng, thực hiện các nhiệm vụ y tế, tham gia các chương trình y tế quốc gia rất tích cực, cuối cùng đã làm giảm mắc, giảm chết và hạn chế nguy cơ dịch bệnh truyền nhiễm xảy ra trên địa bàn. Thành công đó, không những biểu hiện ở kiểm soát các căn bệnh truyền nhiễm mà còn hạn chế về các bệnh không lây nhiễm, dù không trực tiếp điều trị nhưng họ đã và đang tuyền truyền truyền thông giáo dục sức khỏe cho cộng đồng tích cực.Và điều đó giờ đây rất cần trong các chiến lược hành động tiến tới loại trừ nhiều bệnh truyền nhiễm như phong, lao và đặc biệt là sốt rét từ nay đến năm 2030.
