Mặc dù giun Ancylostoma ceylanicum được biết như một loài giun tròng lưu hành rộng rãi trên chó và mèo tại châu Á, song góp phần gây bệnh ở người như một tác nhân giun móc lây truyền từ động vật tiềm tàng vẫn chưa khám phá hết. Kể từ khi phát hiện bởi tác giả Lane năm 1913 như một “ký sinh trùng mới” ở người cách nay gần thế kỷ, giun móc này được xem là loại ký sinh trùng bất thường và hiếm gặp và dường như bỏ qua trong nhiều nghiên cứu ở người.
Tuy nhiên, các điều tra dựa trên sinh học phân tử gần đây tại châu Á chỉ ra rằng A. ceylanicum là loài giun móc phổ biến đứng thứ 2 gây bệnh ở người, gồm 6% và 23% trong tổng số ca nhiễm trùng giun móc mỏ rõ ràng. Trong nhiễm trùng gây nhiễm thực nghiệm, A. ceylanicum gây hình ảnh lâm sàng tương tự như nhiễm giun móc ở người từ trước đây, gồm có triệu chứng ngứa, đau bụng từ vừa đến nặng trong giai đoạn cấp. Nhiễm trùng A. ceylanicum tự nhiên ở người đã được báo cáo ở hầu hết các vùng địa lý mà trong đó giun móc được biết lưu hành trên chó và mèo, tuy nhiên phần lớn các báo cáo, không có dữ liệu lâm sàng. Các loài giun móc ở người giống nhau nhiều như thế, các con giun A. ceylanicum trưởng thành có thể phân lập trong đoạn hồi tràng gây nhiễm trùng mạn tính và thiếu máu. Ngoài ra, giun móc có thể hoạt động như A.caninum và có thể tìm thấy ở đường tiêu hóa thấp hơn, dẫn đến phù ruột và đau bụng, tiêu chảy và đại tiện phân máu đi kèm theo tăng bạch cầu ái toan trong máu ngoại vi. Có hay chăng A. ceylanicum có khả năng dẫn đến căn bệnh giun móc cổ điển và đưa đến tỷ lệ mắc bệnh thông qua đáp ứng dị ứng không được kiểm soát trên một số cá nhân vấn còn chưa xác định. Các nghiên cứu trong tương lai phối hợp sử dụng các công cụ chẩn đoán phân tử với các dữ liệu lâm sàng và phân tử sẽ làm rõ vai trò sinh bệnh ở người. Phòng chống bệnh lây truyền từ động vật sang người này là cần thiết trong một tiếp cạn lồng ghép đa phương "One Health" ở cộng đồng nơi mà schos và con người có mối quan hệ gần gũi.
