Fascioliasis patients increasing in some provinces of Central Vietnam in the first quarter of 2009

In the first months of 2009 (from January to March, 2009), the number of Fascioliasis patients has tended to increase in Central Vietnam, especially at the IMPE Quy Nhon's specialist clinic.

After Egaten 250mg tablets were provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institute of Malarialogy Parasitology & Entomology (NIMPE) and the Institute of Malarialogy Parasitology & Entomology Quy Nhon (IMPE Quy Nhon) have distributed this medicine to the provinces based on the number of reported fascioliasis patients and the demand for admitted patients at hospitals. However, the patients coming to the Institute's specialist clinic for medical examination and treatment has unexpectedly increased in number; particularly in the first quarter of 2009, 401 in 1977 patients were positively diagnosed with Fascioliasis, accounting for 20,28%, ie. 60,35% higher against the same period of 2008.

Therefore, in comparision with the same period of 2008, the number of Fascioliasis patients being treated at the Institute's clinic in the first quarter of 2009 raised 60,35%, although the drug was allocated enough to provinces. This implies a significant increase in the number of patients in Central Vietnam in 2009 against that of 2008. According to the statistic of the clinic, these patients mostly come from the provinces of Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa.

and treatment on April, 2009

The Institute's doctors are examining and giving an color

ultrasonic scan to Fascioliasis patients at the Institute's clinic.

Confronted with the situation of about 40-45 fascioliasis patients coming to per day, the Institute's specialist clinic has to increase the number of doctors and specialists in order to admit patients, provide considerate medical examination and treatment, and offer professional advice for disease prevention. In addition, the Institute's clinic has been equipped with a color ultrasonic scanner and a gastro-entero endoscope to help the diagnosis and treatment to be more and more effective.
