Helminthiasis and intestinal parasites situation in the first half of 2010

Fascioliasis situation

According to the statistics of IMPE-Quy Nhon, in the first half of 2010, there were 1,028 Fascioliasis morbidity cases in Central Vietnam (with the Institute's clinic 528 and the provinces of Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam 500) and 2,360 cases of follow-up exammination.

However, these statistics were not insufficient because health services didn't report frequently to the Institute after detecting and treating at localities.

Parasitic diseases situation

In the first half of 2010, there were 16,678 patients from many provinces/cities coming to the Institute's clinic for Fascioliasis and parasitic diseases treatment, including Toxocara canis/ascaris with 4,891 of new morbidity cases, 2,316 of follow-up examination; Strongiloides stercoralis with 3,454 of new morbidity, 1,064 of follow-up examination; Gnathostoma stercoralis with 2,300 of new morbidity, 843 of follow-up examination; Taenia solium with 1,985 of new morbidity, 632 of follow-up examination and 4,049 of other common diseases.

Helminthiasis control activities in the first half of 2010

Surveillance activities

Conduct the Toxocara canis/ascaris situation surveillance in two communes of Quang Ngai province and Van Canh district (Binh Dinh) and detect 83 positive cases out of 406 examined o­nes.

The soil-transmitted helminthiasis surveillance in Binh Thuan province resulted in a general infection rate of 4.61%, including Toxocara canis/ascaris 0.48%, Trichuris trichiura 0.97%, Ancylostoma duodenale 3.39%.

The soil-transmitted helminthiasis surveillance in Ninh Thuan province resulted in a general infection rate of 7.74%, including Toxocara canis/ascaris 7.27%, Ancylostoma duodenale 0.46%.

The soil-transmitted helminthiasis surveillance in Khanh Hoa province resulted in a general infection rate of 5.86%, including Toxocara canis/ascaris 1.64%, Trichuris trichiura 0.7%, Ancylostoma duodenale 3.52%.

The Opisthorchiasis situation surveillance at Thuan Hanh commune, Dak Song district (Dak Nong) found a 8% infection rate.

Research activities

The Institute conducted the Institutte-level project "Research o­n infection rate and intensity of Opisthorchaisis after 5- year intervention in provinces of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen"

The result of surveillance at two communes of My Tho, My Chanh (Phu My district, Binh Dinh province) found5.20% and 3.0%infection rate of Opisthorchiasis.

The result of surveillance at two communes of An Chan, An My (Tuy An district, Phu Yen province) found 0.24% and 6.25% infection rate of Opisthorchiasis.

Supervision activities

The Institute organised the supervision of the deworming campaign for primary school children in 7 provinces of Central Vietnam, including Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan. As a result, 565,237/572,282 school children took deworming medicine, achieving 98.77%.

Participated the workshop o­n reviewing infectious diseases in Lao Cai.

Focus of Fascioliasis and intestinal parasitic diseases control activities in the last half of 2010.

Fascioliasis control project for highly-infected areas

The Institute suggested the Ministry of Health to support Fascioliasis control project for 7 highly-infected provinces (Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Da Nang and Gia Lai) in the period of 3 years (2010-2012) so as to decrease infection rate; besides, enhance the quality of diagnosis and treatment, health communication and education o­n Fasioliasis controlfor the community and give control measures effectively.

Research and surveillance activities of helminthiasis diseases

Supervised Fascioliasis situation in some areas of Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam; researched intermediate hosts causing Schistosomiasis in Dak Lak province.

Monitored helminthiasis control activities, trained the medical staff at provincial level to improve gradually the laboratory systems o­n intestinal parasites for localities.

Supported technology and some equipments for the intestinal parasite laboratory of two provinces of Quang Binh and Thua Thien-Hue.
