The detection and treatment of helminthic diseases at the Institute's specialist clinic in the first three months of 2011
In the first three months of 2011, at the special clinic of the IMPE Quy Nhon, there were a large number of patients being diagnosed with intestinal parasitic diseases, which forecast an increase and development of theses diseases in the coming summery months in Central Vietnam. According to the statistics, in the first quarter of 2011, out of 11,209 people coming to the specialist clinic of the Institute for medical examination (including 2,330 of second-examination), those to be infected with helminthic diseases made up a relatively high proportion. 1. Fascioliasis In the first 3 months of 2011, there were 362 Fascioliasis patients detected (January: 125 cases, February: 95 cases, March: 142 cases), accounting for 4.07% of 8,879 people coming for examination, and 478 Fascioliasis patients invited for follow-up examination (January: 148 cases, February: 126 cases, March: 204 cases). This proved that Fascioliasis tended to increase in March - the time about to enter the hot season. These patients mainly came from most provinces of Central Vietnam and some other regions such as the east and west of South Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City and some northern provinces of Central Vietnam (eg. Nghe An, Ha Tinh province), of which those from the provinces of Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Gia Lai, etc. accounted for high percentage. If the statistic of Fascioliasis patients carries out in other localties, at least 250-300 cases of Fascioliasis will be detected per month in all health facilities nationwide. | In the first 3 months of 2011, 362 Fascioliasis patients were detected (January: 125 cases, February: 95 cases, March: 142 cases) | Fascioliasis patients were all treated as outpatients or inpatients with the specific drug Triclabendazole (Egaten 250mg), then alloted second-examination after one, three and six months for determining the degree of recovery. Related to the provision of drugs for treatment, the IMPE Quy Nhon has also reported to the Ministry of Health (MoH) the treatment of Fascioliasis as well as preparation of specific drugs for the provinces of Central Vietnam in the coming time. 2. Other helminthic diseases According to the statistics of the Institute's clinic, in the first 3 months of 2011, the clinic has detected 3,442 new cases and 1,223 cases of follow-up examination of Toxocariasis; 8,345 new cases and 571 cases of second examination of Strongyloides stercoralis; 7,777 new cases and 260 cases of re-examination of Gnathostomiasis; 7,506 new cases and 437 cases of second examination of Cysticercosis; 2,356 new cases and 179 cases of follow-up examination of Intestinal Amoebiasis. These patients were also in Central Vietnam and came to the specialist clinic of the Institute after receiving unsuccessful treatment at other general clinics. These are presently typical helminthic diseases which need a satisfactory resolution to ensure the people's health and productivity. The IMPE Quy Nhon has also send the MoH thereport on currently emerging helminthiasis in Central Vietnam and proposal to allow the Institute to build a disease control project within three years with the purpose of reducing the morbidity in the community.
