Fascioliasis and intestinal parasitic diseases in Central Vietnam tending to increase highly in first 4 months of 2011

With the advantageous condition of climate and environment, the infection of intestinal parasites has become popular, especially in Central Vietnam in the first 4 years of 2011, rate of Fascioliasis and emerging parasitic diseases increased highly against the same period of 2010.

According to the statistic of the IMPE-Quy Nhon, in first 4 months of 2011, cases of Fascioliasis and other parasitic diseases tended to increase highly; in addition, next months are summery ones, which create favourable conditions for the continuous development and spread of parasitic diseases.

New cases of Helminthiasis

In first 4 months of 2011, there were 15,348 patients coming to seek dignosis and treatment at the clinic. Among the patients, 537 cases were diagnosed with Fascioliasis, 11,918 patients were infected with Toxocara canis, 11,767 cases of Strongyloides stercoralis, 10,713 cases of Taenia solium and 3,479 cases of Amoebiasis.

Among 44,010 patients coming to take medical examination at the Institute's clinic, 2010,682 cases were detected Fascioliasis, 4,908 cases of Toxocara canis, 2,640 cases of Strongyloides stercoralis, 1,941 cases of Gnathostoma stercoralis, 1,612 cases of Taenia solium and 882 cases of Amoebiasis.

Most of the patients having acute symptoms were treated at provincial health services, but they didn't feel better, and then were transfered to the Institute. Besides, there were patients who didn't have enough conditions for examination and diagnosis at grass-roots health systems.

Babies often sucking their fingers easily get pinworm infection.

Pinworm is a popular kind of parasites in small intestine.
Sientific name: Enterobius vemicularis, transmitting
from people to people.

 Cases of follow-up examination

Besides new cases detected, cases of follow-up examination also increased highly in first 4 months of 2011, with 651 of Fascioliasis, 1,580 of Toxocara canis, 737 of Strongyloides stercoralis, 316 of Gnathostoma stercoralis, 543 of Taenia solium and 206 of Amoebiasis. It proved that the patients hadn't been aware of self-protection from infecting helminthiasis, especially in food safety.

Confronted with the increasing situation of Fascioliasis and emerging parasitic diseases in first 4 months of 2011, the IMPE-Quy Nhon directed the regional provinces to strengthen the detection and treatment of the diseases at grassroots level, at the same time to make report to the Ministry of Health to request support for the fund; having the plan for providing antimalarial drugs and guiding the medical-staff of all levels on detection and diagnosis of parasitic diseases. Moreover, the medical staff have to provide the people the protection measures to prevent from infecting the diseases.
