Anti-malaria competition for ethnic minority in Khanh Vinh district, Khanh Hoa province
Health education and information communication in malaria control for ethnic minorities in deep-lying and remote areas has been considered an important anti-malaria measure, which helps the people to raise awareness about malaria and change their behaviour to protect themselves as well as their families as living in malaria-endemic areas. Over the past years, the malaria control programme in Vietnam in general and Central Vietnam in particular has achieved encouraging results, in which health communication and education plays an important part in lowering malaria morbidity and mortality rate. However, the risk of malaria recurrence is still high, especially in remote, mountainous and unreachable areas. With the purposes of maintaining achieved results and raising the people's knowledge, attitude and practice of anti-malaria in malaria-endemic zones, on 26 June 2011 the Institute of Malariology, Parasitology and Entomology Quy Nhon (IMPE Quy Nhon) in collaboration with the Provincial Malaria Control Center of Khanh Hoa (PMCC Khanh Hoa) and the District Medical Center of Khanh Vinh (DMC Khanh Vinh) held the Anti-malaria Competition for Ethnic Minority in Khanh Vinh district, Khanh Hoa province. | Welcoming music show at the Competition | Attendees at the Competition included Dr. Ho Van Hoang - Deputy Director of IMPE Quy Nhon, Dr. Le Trung Hai - staff of the Provicial Health Department of Khanh Hoa, Dr. Dao Huong - Vice-Director of PMCC Khanh Hoa, Tran Van Tien, MSc. - Vice-Director of DMC Khanh Vinh, Mr. Mau Van Phi - Vice-Chairman of the District People's Committee of Khanh Vinh and representatives form party committees, people's committees and medical stations of Lien Sang, Giang Ly, Khanh Thuong and Son Thai commune, etc.
| In the competitive part: Knowledge about Malaria and Measures against Malaria | | Competitive teams in the Apptitude part. | Competitors were 6 ethnic married couples aged from 18-25 (3 couples each commune). The competition content consisted of 3 main parts: Greetings and Self-Introduction, Apptitude, Knowledge about Malaria and Measures against Malaria.
| Tireless encouragement of local people | The competiton ended up with the following results: Lien Sang team scored 209 points and won the first price, Gian Ly team 205 points - second prize, Son Thai team 195 points - third prize and Khanh Thuong team 184 points - consolation prize.

In his speech to close the competition, Dr. Ho Van Hoang highly apprecitated the enthusiastic participation of competitive teams, the tireless encouragement of local people and the active assistance of authorities at all levels for the success of the competition. The model of the competition will continue to be used as a key measures of health communication and education for ethnic minorities in several provinces of Central Vietnam by the IMPE Quy Nhon in the coming time.
