This newsletter aims to provide regular updates o­n APMEN activities and events as well as news o­n elimination efforts in the Asia Pacific region.

2016 VxWG & SRWG Meetings

The APMEN Vivax Working Group (VxWG) and Surveillance and Response Working Group (SRWG) hosted their annual meetings back-to-back o­n October 17-21 in Bali, Indonesia. 

Each working group hosted an annual meeting in addition to a half-day integrated meeting o­n cross-cutting themes related to case management, P. vivax, and surveillance and response. In attendance were 33 country partners representing 16 countries in the Asia Pacific and a range of the Network's Partner Institutions.   

The VxWG convened o­n October 17-18 and hosted sessions o­n radical cure and G6PD testing. The VxWG and SRWG integrated sessions focused o­n ultrasensitive diagnostics and areas for improved collaboration between the two working groups. The SRWG convened from October 19-21 and hosted sessions o­n the forthcoming WHO Malaria Elimination Operational Manual, foci identification and response, and rapid reporting technologies for malaria elimination.

Transition Update

We are pleased to announce the launch of the joint APMEN-APLMA Secretariat in it's new location in Singapore this month.   The transition of the APMEN Secretariat to it's new regional home also coincides with a change in Secretariat team who we look forward to introducing in the New Year.

The process of confirming available funding for the Network and the development of an APMEN Strategic Plan 2017 - 2020 is also currently in the final stages.  

We are also happy to announce the much anticipated launch of the new APMEN website.  The new-look website will provide visitors access to up-to-date Country resources, easy-to-find past meeting materials, information o­n current and future APMEN opportunities and progress o­n the regions' 2030 goal to eliminate malaria.

Entomology & Vector Control Meeting

An Entomology and Vector Control for Malaria Elimination Regional Meeting & Workshop was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 7-10 November 2016.  

This meeting of entomology and vector control specialists aimed at strengthening regional vector control efforts and addressing priority challenges of malaria elimination, and was supported by Kasetsart University Thailand, APMEN, Malaria Consortium and Roll Back Malaria's Vector Control Working Group.

Regional updates

Congratulations to Sri Lanka on achieiving malaria-free certification!  As a founding Country Partner of APMEN, Sri Lanka has valuable experience to share with other countries as they progress towards their goals.

The 2016 WHO World Malaria Report has recently been released, including data o­n 91 countries and areas with o­ngong malaria transmission.
