Some outstanding events in commemoration of Vietnamese Doctors
On the occasion of Vietnamese Doctors' Day ( February 27), we would like to review some outstanding events commemorating This Day. Prime Minister launches Vietnam health programme Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc launched the Vietnam health programme at a teleconference participated by all 63 provinces and cities nationwide on the occasion of Vietnamese Doctors' Day - February 27. The programme was approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc under Decision No 109/QD-TTg dated September 2, 2018. It sets out tasks and solutions to achieve 28 targets in 11 prioritised health areas, including nutrition, physical training, child healthcare, smoking-alcohol impact prevention, environmental sanitation, and food safety. Speaking at the event, Phuc praised public healthcare sector's continuous progress and pointed to its shortcomings. The Government leader noted that despite high average life expectancy, Vietnamese people generally have to live with diseases for about 10 years in their life, meaning a decline in life quality. Their physical stature also improves little over the past years, he added. Vietnamese average height is 164.5 cm for males and 153 cm for females and only increases by 3 cm after 25 years. The PM called for intensified awareness campaigns on healthcare, particularly the need for a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercises, no smoking, limited alcohol drinking, and regular health check-ups. Following the launch were a series of activities taking place nationwide, such as health check-ups, health consultancy, mass physical exercise, and cycling for health. National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan extended her best wishes to the staff of medical sector on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of Vietnamese Doctors' Day (February 27) during a ceremony at the National Hospital of Traditional Medicine in Hanoi.The NA Chairwoman expressed her delight that the hospital fulfilled its eight assigned tasks last year with over 90 percent of patients recovering or relieving from illness. She said the Party and State always pay attention to developing traditional medicine to improve public healthcare quality. In legislation, the NA has built the Law on Protection of Public Health, the Pharmaceutical Law and the Law on Health Insurance. In the near future, the law-making body will continue reviewing legal regulations to further improve public health care, Ngan said. As health and education-training are daily concerns, she asked the sector to continue developing traditional medicine. The hospital was required to turn itself into a trustworthy destination for health care and international cooperation in traditional medicine with countries in the region and the world. The top legislator highlighted the importance of the combination of traditional and modern medicines in public health care, adding that the hospital staff need to build on their past achievements to contribute to public health care in the most effective way. Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the hospital Vu Nam said it is now home to eight functional rooms, 14 clinical and seven near-clinical departments, four centres, and nearly 500 staff. Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said 58 out of the 63 cities and provinces now have traditional medicine hospitals while all hospitals have traditional medicine departments. The health sector is striving to adopt traditional medicine in 80 percent of medical stations in wards and communes. On the occasion, Chairwoman Ngan visited and presented gifts to patients receiving traditional medicine treatment at the hospital's oncology department. Officials and staff members of Vietnam's level-two field hospital in South Sudan held a ceremony at the base in Bentiu of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on February 27 to mark the 64th Vietnamese Doctors' Day (February 27).
The event was attended by Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh, who was leading a Vietnamese delegation on a working trip to South Sudan, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Dang Dinh Quy, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) Pham Ngoc Minh, Director of Vietnam Peacekeeping Department Hoang Kim Phung, and Director of the Military Medical Department Nguyen Xuan Kien, along with representatives from the UN and units at the Bentiu base. Head of the Bentiu Field Office Hiroko Hirahara thanked the Government and the VPA for sending the field hospital to South Sudan. She praised the great efforts and effective contributions made by the hospital staff to the peacekeeping operation in South Sudan. Hirahara said she appreciates the proactiveness, professionalism and expertise of the hospital staff, stressing that they have become an important part of the Bentiu base. UNMISS Chief Medical Officer Ibal Mohd said staff members at the Vietnamese field hospital treated 550 patients during just four months they took over the work from the UK field hospital, which is an impressive figure for a level-2 field hospital at a UN peacekeeping mission. Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh hailed the performance of the Vietnamese field hospital, saying that he is proud that the hospital staff members have proved that Vietnam is making active and effective contributions to safeguarding world peace. On the occasion, the Deputy Defence Minister, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy and the guests were treated to Vietnamese dishes cooked by the hospital staff members. Vietnam deployed a level-2 field hospital with 63 staff members to the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan in October 2018. Earlier, 29 Vietnamese officers had performed peacekeeping tasks in the Central African Republic and South Sudan. The Ministry of Health has launched the 2019 Vietnam Medical Film Days in Hanoi as part of activities to celebrate the 64th Vietnam Physician Day on February 27.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien highlighted health issues as an attractive and endless topic for artists. "On behalf of the health sector, I have deeply appreciated efforts of documentary film artists. They have created extremely precious image annals on operation history of the Vietnamese health sector that helps doctors and health workers understand history and continue to inherit and promote the traditions and achievements of previous generations," said Tien. During the three-day event, 10 films will be shown at the health ministry, the Hanoi Medical University, the Public Health University, and the Studio for Document and Scientific Films in Hanoi. The films document the health sector from 1970 to date. They also honour doctors and health workers who silently sacrificed their lives for the country's health care and protection. A highlight of the event is The 30-year Reunion, a film directed by People's Artist Nguyen Thuoc about the life of Nguyen Thi Kim Lai, the 'small guerrilla' character in the picture of a female Vietnamese soldier holding a gun to oppose downed a American pilot in the resistance war against America. After the war, Lai was a nurse at the Ha Tinh Traditional Medicine Hospital. She is the embodiment of the spirit of courage in war but full of humanity, promoting medical ethics in peacetime. On the sidelines of the event, a photo exhibition will showcase images and contents of 10 outstanding films at the event. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 26 applauded silent contributions of doctors and health workers from central to grassroots levels to public health care on the occasion of Vietnamese Doctors' Day (February 27).
While visiting the Hanoi-based Bach Mai General Hospital, the leader extended his greetings to medical staff of the hospital and the health sector in general. He praised the development of the medical sector in all spheres over the past 64 years since the day was designated, with the number of doctors and nurses increasing from only 300 in 1954 to 460,000 at present, and 14,000 health facilities nationwide. The PM also lauded Bach Mai hospital's growth as well as its contributions to the national medical sector during its nearly-110-year history. He urged the hospital to take the lead in reforming administrative procedures, applying modern technologies and improving medical services, aiming to become a leading hospital in the region in a near future. The leader asked the hospital and the entire medical sector to make the best use of investment resources, suggesting Bach Mai focus on developing spearhead services, meeting diverse health demands of the public and reducing the cases of overseas medical treatment of Vietnamese. Besides, it is necessary to promptly put into opeation branches of the Bach Mai General Hospital and the Vietnam-Germany Hospital in order to ease hospital overload, PM Phuc said. Since its inception in 1911, Bach Mai has become the largest hospital in the north, with more than 3,000 beds and 3,000-strong staff. It serves some 160,000 inpatients and nearly 2 million outpatients each year.
