The theme for World Malaria Day 2015 is Invest in the Future, Defeat Malaria. While at face value this might seem like an obvious declaration, in the fight against this relentless killer of an estimated 584,000 each year, significant investments in improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment can mean the difference between life and death.
Malariais one of the most serious diseases of the world and every year kills millions of humans every year. However, in contrast to other diseases, malaria can be prevented and defeated. This is the good news, but still, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 584,000 people died due to malaria in the year 2013.
World Malaria Day will be marked on 25 April 2015. The global campaign theme isInvest in the future. Defeat malaria. World Malaria Day is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria control and elimination. It is also an opportunity for new donors to join the global malaria fight, and for research and academic institutions to showcase their scientific work.
In 2008, the malaria community came together to celebrate the first World Malaria Day and redouble global efforts to fight one of the world's oldest diseases, which at that time killed one million children a year. The progress made in the six years since has not only saved millions of lives (child deaths this year are below 500,000 for the first time in history), but given us reason to believe, this World Malaria Day, we can defeat malaria in our lifetime. Here is why:
The launching ceremony and the march, was held by the collaboration of IMPE Quy Nhon, NIMPE, WHO and Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee in Krong-Pa district, Gia Lai province - one of the most severe malaria endemic areas of Vietnam on April 25th, 2014 with the theme "Invest in the future. Defeat malaria."
