1. A Novel Route to Malaria Treatments: Semisynthetic Artemisinin

This infographic illustrates the key achievements of the project to establish and validate a manufacturing process to produce semisynthetic artemisinin (ssART) at industrial scale and commercialize ssART. Production of ssART aims to supplement a historically volatile botanical supply chain, strengthening the artemisinin market and ensuring that the global need for artemisinin-based combination therapies can be met, thus supporting current worldwide malaria control measures and strategies for malaria elimination.

In Kenya, malaria in pregnancy continues to contribute to high maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. By translating emerging evidence o­n community-based distribution of antimalarial medicine into policy action, policymakers in Kenya have the opportunity to significantly decrease malaria-related mortality and morbidity during pregnancy, safeguarding the health and lives of countless women and newborns. In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria in pregnancy continues to contribute to high maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. o­ne approach to the problem is intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy with sulfadoxine pyrimethamine, an antimalarial safe for use in pregnancy. 27. Semisynthetic Artemisinin: Cross-Sector Partnership to Stabilize the Antimalarial Drug Supply

Artemisinin-based combination therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for malaria, but global demand has often outpaced production, and pricing has been volatile. With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH and our partners set out to develop a new pharmaceutical manufacturing process to produce commercial volumes of high-quality, nonseasonal, and affordable artemisinin to supplement the plant-based supply. This poster, presented at the Bay Area World Malaria Day Symposium o­n April 25, 2014, presents key facts o­n malaria, the market for artemisinin, partner roles, and commercial production.

38. A Phase 3 Trial of RTS,S/AS01 Malaria Vaccine in African Infants

This article, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), reports results from a pivotal, large-scale Phase 3 trial of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine. When compared to immunization with a control vaccine, infants (aged 6 to 12 weeks at first vaccination) vaccinated with RTS,S had o­ne-third fewer episodes of both clinical and severe malaria and had similar reactions to the injection. In this trial, RTS,S demonstrated an acceptable safety and tolerability profile.
