Nhân loại có 3 kẻ thù quan trọng đó là sốt, đói nghèo và chiến tranh, trong đó, sốt vẫn được coi là nguy hiểm nhất (“Humanityhasbutthreegreatenemies, Fever,famineandwar:ofthesebyfarthe greatest,byfarthemostterribleisfever -William Osler, 1896). Sốt rét vẫn là vấn đề y tế công cộng nghiêm trọng với tỷ lệ mắc và tử vong tiếp tục giữ vị trí cao trong danh sách các bệnh truyền nhiễm. Sốt rét ác tính (SRAT) là vấn đề cấp cứu y khoa bởi diễn tiến bệnh nhanh với các biến chứng nghiêm trọng, đe dọa tử vong cao cho nhiều bệnh nhân.
